It is one of most enjoyable ways to scale a mountain and there's no doubt you'll come away feeling like a true mountaineer! Tryfan features in most of our Snowdonia scrambling trips and is one of the best scrambles in Snowdonia. Wild camping weekends will involve journeying through the lesser hiked, but no less spectacular areas of Snowdonia, sleeping under the stars in a remote mountain location (maybe on a mountain summit, maybe next to a beautiful lake - The locations are limitless when wild camping!). More info City Mountaineering runs guided trips year round, taking you from London to the mountains. Our all-inclusive group trips from London are limited to just eight people and include travel, accommodation, breakfasts and lunches (so you'll only need money for those pub dinners!). Every trip is led by a qualified and experienced guide whose primary aim is keeping you safe. You don't need to have any prior experience of scrambling, wild camping or remote hiking and the small group size will enable us to give you our full attention throughout the weekend, ensuring your safety and enjoyment is our number one priority. Keep checking back for new trips, or head to the diary page to see all our trips for the year. If there's a particular mountain you'd love to climb, scrambling route you want to test yourself against, or trail you'd like to explore but you don't see it listed, feel free to get in touch and we'd be happy to arrange a bespoke trip. Most of all the routes we hiked were wonderful, challenging and remote, away from the tourists, routes I'd never do on my own. Thank you and see you on the next one. Zoe I had a fantastic week in Scotland with City Mountaineering. Stu was an excellent guide whose knowledge of the mountains is beyond impressive, and whose calm, patient approach really helped put me at ease. Best of all, it’s thanks to him I tackled a climb I would never have thought I could. Can’t recommend enough. Plus, Beinn the dog is very cute! Chris Excellent adventure! Returning customer and will keep coming back, all of the guides know the best trails. Best way of disconnecting from the city. All amazingly organised! All you need to do is relax and walk. Can’t wait for the next escape! Thanks team. Noela Fabulous Isle of Skye trek with City Mountaineering! • Who are we? | City Mountaineering

Meet the Leaders: Kirsten Meet Other Leaders Name: Kirsten Mountain Experience: 7yrs Where did you grow up?: Florida, USA Current Home City: London Favourite Mountain: Tryfan Favourite food to pack in your rucksack: Haribo Favourite National Park: Cairngorms or Peak District Q. How did you become interested in the outdoors? A. Soon after moving to the UK at 16, I joined the D of E award and then the Ten Tors Challenge. Having spent most of my life near swamps or beaches, exploring the UK’s trails and mountains was a novel experience for me, and continues to be today. Q. What is one lesson the mountains have taught you? A. Be prepared, and be prepared for change. If you have the right gear with you then you’re ready for most situations in the mountains, which is helpful because things rarely go according to plan. After various trips in the mountains have required deviations from my original plans, it’s made me much more open to change in my day-to-day life. Q. Other than boots, if you had unlimited money to spend on one piece of kit, what would it be? A. I would pay unspeakable amounts of money for someone to create a thermos that keeps coffee warm for a solid 12 hours. Q. What is one thing you pack in your rucksack, whatever the season and whatever the weather? A. My lucky hat – I’ve had it for over 10 years now! It’s a bit raggedy and its colour has been faded by the sun, but I think it still has some years left in it. Q. What advice would you give to someone going out into the mountains for the first time? A. Always pack more snacks than you think you’ll eat, and bring extra layers. Summits are colder than sea level, and you don’t want to be the hiker having a ‘hangry’ meltdown on the trail! Q. What is your favourite season to be out in the mountains and why? A. The summer – I relish spending long days out in the sun. Plus, I get cold camping at night in the winter, so a boiling hot tent in the summer is a fair trade-off to me! Q. Name three mountains on your bucket list. 1. Denali, Alaska 2. Mount Ushba, Georgia 3. Fitz Roy, Patagonia Q. What do you like to do to keep fit when you’re not in the mountains? A. I spend a fair bit of time running and climbing indoors in London – you’ll normally see me at The Reach, Vauxwall or The Castle most weeknights! Q. If you could go anywhere in the world that you hadn’t been, where would it be? A. For years, I’ve dreamt of exploring Patagonia in Chile. Those jagged peaks and green forests are the stuff dreams are made of! Besides Patagonia, I would love to spend several weeks in Wisconsin exploring the Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks. Some of the landscapes there are otherworldly Q. What is your favourite mountain/expedition/adventure book? (fiction/non-fiction) A. I’m currently obsessed with Gwen Moffat’s Space Below My Feet. Her nonchalant attitude through much of the book belies her skill and the obstacles she faced becoming the first certified female guide in the UK. It’s an inspiration for any woman that wants a career in the outdoors. Q. What is your favourite City Mountaineering memory? A. It’s probably the first trip I guided for City Mountaineering – the Snowdonia weekender. The weather was absolutely foul, with a constant deluge of rain throughout the day. Considering it was the first time several people in my group had hiked up a mountain, I worried the weather would put them off hiking forever. However it was all smiles at the summit, and lots of celebratory pints at the pub in the evening! To this day I see photos of some of them summiting mountains ages after their first trip, and it makes me smile knowing that the rainy hike up Snowdon ignited their love of the mountains. SNOWDONIA History HISTORY Snowdonia National Park was established in 1951 as the third national park in Britain, following the Peak District and the Lake District. It covers 827 square miles (2,140 km2), and has 37 miles (60 km) of coastline. The Snowdonia National Park covers parts of the counties of Gwynedd and Conwy. Before the boundaries of the national park were designated, "Snowdonia" was generally used to refer to a smaller area, namely the upland area of northern Gwynedd centred on the Snowdon massif, whereas the national park covers an area more than twice that size extending far to the south into Meirionnydd. The traditional Snowdonia therefore includes the ranges of Snowdon and its satellites, the Glyderau, the Carneddau, the Moelwynion and the Moel Hebog group. It does not include the hills to the south of Maentwrog. As Eryri (see above), this area has a unique place in Welsh history, tradition and culture. The Snowdonia Society is a registered charity formed in 1967. It is a voluntary group of people with an interest in the area and its protection. ETYMOLOGY The English name for the area derives from Snowdon, which (at 1,085m) is the highest mountain in Wales. In Welsh, the area is named Eryri. A commonly held belief is that the name is derived from eryr ("eagle"), and thus means 'the abode/land of eagles', but recent evidence is that it means Highlands, and is related to the Latin oriri (to rise). The term Eryri first appeared in a manuscript in the 9th-century Historia Brittonum, in an account of the downfall of the semi-legendary 5th-century king Gwrtheyrn. MYTHS AND LEGENDS The culture and identity of the Snowdonia region has been significantly influenced by the myths, legends, folklore, giants, monsters and magic that are associated with almost every lake, hill, mountain and village. The Welsh tradition of storytelling has ensured that these rich and varied tales are still as vibrant today as they were in their early beginnings in the mists of time. Wherever you visit in Snowdonia Mountains and Coast, the past, its magic, mythology and legends are around every corner. LAND OWNERSHIP The park is governed by the Snowdonia National Park Authority, which is made up of local government and Welsh representatives, and its main offices are at Penrhyndeudraeth. Unlike national parks in other countries, Snowdonia (and other such parks in Britain) is made up of both public and private lands under central planning authority. The makeup of land ownership at Snowdonia is as follows: - 69.9% Private - 8.9% National Trust - 1.2% National Park Authority - 17.5% Natural Resource Wales - 0.9% Water companies - 1.6% Other More than 26,000 people live within the park. 58.6% of the population could speak Welsh in 2011. While most of the land is either open or mountainous land, there is a significant amount of agricultural activity within the park. INTERESTING FACT Unusually, Snowdonia National Park has a hole in the middle, around the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, a slate quarrying centre. This was deliberately excluded from the park when it was set up to allow the development of new light industry to replace the reduced slate industry.

A letter from Stu View trip diary Register for a free trip Last Updated: 14 July 2021 To our valued City Mountaineering community, For over a year now we have either not been able to offer trips, or we have run trips with reduced capacity. However, the guidance is about to change, which will bring some changes to our trips and allow more of us to get out of the city and into the mountains! Covid-19 restrictions summary England From next Monday (19th July) a ll legal restrictions related to Covid-19 will be lifted Scotland From next Monday (19th July) all areas of Scotland will move to a modifed 'Level 0'. This means that general restictions will be eased, but: Hospitality is required to close early (although a midnight closure of pubs is late enough :) Group sizes are limited to 10 people from 4 households in public indoor spaces Groups sizes are limited to 15 people in outdoor spaces The requirement to wear a face mask on public transport and in public indoors spaces remains Wales From Saturday (17th July) up to 6 people from 6 households can meet in holiday accommodation and any amount of people can meet outdoors. From Saturday 7th August all legal restrictions related to Covid-19 will be lifted Impact to City Mountaineering adventures The relaxation of legal restrictions obviously has no negative impact to City Mountaineering trips, but we will continue to monitor the risks associated with Covid-19 propagation on our trips and make any necessary adjustments to control this risk accordingly. The positive impact is that we are now able to increase capacity back to a maximum of 8 people! However, we will continue to insist that face masks are worn throughout any journey on trains or in the minibus (this is regardless of the country in which the trip is taking place, or the relaxed rules some countries are taking over others). Due to the lack of social distancing in the minibus when we increase group sizes to 8, we will now insist on the following evidence to be sent to us 1-day prior to your trip departure date : Evidence of having received two Covid-19 vaccinations (the second dose being received more than 10-days prior to the trip start date), or; Evidence of a lateral flow home test negative result (the test having been taken within 48-hours of the trip start date) We have added a lot of new trips to the diary over the past week, with many trips already full with 8 people! Next 6 trips with availability We know that you’re all itching to get back into the mountains, so here are the next 6 trips in the diary with availability: 23-30 July – Expedition Series: Traverse The Lake District - 1 male space available 30 July-01 August - Weekend - Hiking, Wild Camping & Wild Swimming in The Brecon Beacons - 2 spaces available 13-15 August - Weekend - Hiking and Wild Camping in The Lake District - 4 spaces available 16-18 August - Midweek - Scrambling in The Lake District - 4 spaces available 26-30 August - Bank Holiday Weekend - Hiking and Wild Camping in The Cairngorms - 1 space available 09 Sept-03 October - 1, 2 or 3-weeks - Expedition Series: Hike The Cape Wrath Trail - 2-6 spaces available Accommodation Wherever possible we will try to book 'bricks and mortar' accommodation on trips that are not wild camping adventures. However, with the National Parks and other mountain areas being so popular this year, we are likely to continue staying on campsites (with clean washing, shower and toilet facilities) throughout the summer - the exception is the Expedition Series events, which includes hotel/hostel/bunkhouse accommodation on the first and last night of the trip. You will be provided with a 1-person tent (larger tents available for couples) and a clean, warm sleeping bag and sleeping mat for the duration of the trip. Please note that trip descriptions may state hostel/hotel/etc. However, this may not be the case throughout 2021 and we will not be altering all of the descriptions for this short-term action. If you've joined us on trips over the past year, you will know that staying on campsites has been a huge success with less rushing to meet our dinner reservations, allowing us spend more time enjoying each others company with a barbecue and a mug of wine as the sun sets. The New Beginning Thank you once again for staying so supportive and for following City Mountaineering either through Facebook , Instagram or through our weekly emails. We work hard in providing the best and most unique mountain experiences for everyone and, without you, we would not exist. However please remain cautious as restrictions are eased (I really don't want to go into hiding again!) I wish you and your family and friends good health and I’ll see you in the mountains again very soon Stu CORONAVIRUS PREVENTION MEASURES Before any trip takes place You must provide proof of either: Having received two Covid-19 vaccinations (the second dose being received more than 10-days prior to the trip start date), or; Evidence of a lateral flow home test negative result (the test having been taken within 48-hours of the trip start date) You must be in good health and must not have had – or come into contact with anyone who has had - any of the following symptoms in the two weeks prior to joining the trip: - Cough - High temperature/fever - Loss of taste and/or smell Travel - We will check everyone’s temperature on arrival at the meeting point. Anyone with a high temperature will not be able to board the minibus or attend the trip. - You will be required to thoroughly clean your hands before boarding the minibus (cleaning gel will be provided by us). - You will be required to wear a face mask at all times when inside the minibus (you will be expected to bring your own face mask ). - We will not stop at service stations en route unless in an emergency. Trip Accommodation - All overnight trips will involve staying on a designated campsite. 1-person tents, warm sleeping bags and sleeping mats will be provided - All kit will be thoroughly santised between trips After Every Trip The minibus and all kit used on a trip will undergo a thorough deep-clean to ensure it is ready for the next group A WhatsApp group will be setup during/after every trip.
