Meet the Leaders: Edward Meet Other Leaders Name: Edward Pearce-Taylor Mountain Experience: 7yrs Where did you grow up?: Bedfordshire Current Home City: London Favourite Mountain: Buachaille Etive Mòr Favourite food to pack in your rucksack: Chorizo sausage Favourite National Park: The Cairngorms Q. How did you become interested in the outdoors? A. Two things stand out. The first is getting a second-hand book on British birds from a pop-up bookstore on the South Bank when I was eight years old. The sparked my lifelong interest in birds and you can’t be interested in birds without being interested in the outdoors! Second, from a young age I went on an annual holiday with my grandparents to the North Yorkshire Moors (to Goathland, or Aidensfield as its probably better known!). We’d do a little circular walk out of the village and I was always obsessed with getting to the top of things. Q. What is one lesson the mountains have taught you? A. Don’t let discomfort get the better of you. Embrace it and think of the pub at the end of it all. Q. Other than boots, if you had unlimited money to spend on one piece of kit, what would it be? A. Gloves! Without a doubt. Having cold hands can really ruin a day in the hills and, unfortunately, you do tend to get what you pay for when it comes to gloves. Q. What is one thing you pack in your rucksack, whatever the season and whatever the weather? A. I always have an emergency light down-jacket or heavy fleece that gets stashed in a dry-bag at the bottom of my rucksack, whatever the weather and whatever the forecast. I like to know that if something unexpected happens I’ve always a got a warm, dry extra layer to throw on if I need it. Q. What advice would you give to someone going out into the mountains for the first time? A. It’s not a race. Take your time, enjoy it and don’t worry if you’re not moving as fast as you thought you would. You wouldn’t run up the stairs, would you? Q. What is your favourite season to be out in the mountains and why? A. It depends on what I’m doing. If I’m running the trails then a dry summer’s day is hard to beat. However, strapping on a pair of crampons and wielding an ice axe makes anything seem like a true alpine adventure, so a proper Scottish winter is unbeatable. Q. Name three mountains on your bucket list. 1. The Matterhorn 2. Beinn Alligin 3. The Cuillin Ridge (okay, so it’s not strictly a mountain!) Q. What do you do like to do keep fit when you’re not in the mountains? A. Fitness is my passion - or my obsession, depending on who you ask – so I spend a lot of time keeping fit. Lately, road cycling and running are my main focus but I dabble with marathon kayaking and surfski too. I also spend way too much time in the weights gym…not a good habit to get into. Q. If you could go anywhere in the world that you hadn’t been, where would it be? A. Costa Rica. Sadly, the current pandemic forced me to cancel my trip there this month. I’ve never been in a proper rainforest before and I can’t wait to be able to. (If my trip to Costa Rica had gone ahead, my answer to this question would be Antarctica). Q. What is your favourite mountain/expedition/adventure book? (fiction/non-fiction) A. Endurance by Alfred Lansing, about Shackleton’s ill-fated expedition. It’s an old book but the story telling is sublime and the story itself, all based on real events, is just totally unbelievable. Read this and suddenly self-isolating at home with tea and Netflix won’t seem quite so bad… Q. What is your favourite City Mountaineering memory? A. Lots to choose from, of course, but sharing a wee dram with fellow leader, Dave, and the group as we watched the sunset from the north side of Cadair Idris on a wild camping trip is a special one. Stuart Shipp Founder, City Mountaineering

Meet the Leaders: Stuart Meet Other Leaders Name: Stuart Shipp Mountain Experience: 25yrs Where did you grow up?: Milton Keynes Current Home City: Wherever I pitch my tent Favourite Mountain: Suilven Favourite food to pack in your rucksack: Chocolate Favourite National Park: The Lake District Q. How did you become interested in the outdoors? A. I spent most of my childhood outdoors on my bike, exploring local woodland and occasionally [ahem] breaking in to the local farmers hay sheds, climbing to the top of the haystacks and building tunnels to race around. But it was going to university in Newcastle that opened up my world to the mountains. My friends were all outdoors-people and they introduced me to rock climbing, scrambling and hiking throughout the UK Q. What is one lesson the mountains have taught you? A. Always have a back-up plan as things will rarely go as expected. Remain flexible and make the most of your time outdoors. Q. Other than boots, if you had unlimited money to spend on one piece of kit, what would it be? A. A waterproof jacket is the most important piece of kit in the mountains. I've experienced temperatures as low as -40 degrees in far away lands, but the coldest I've ever felt was in +2 degrees on The Kinder Plateau in The Peak District. It was wet and windy and I was close to hypothermic. A good waterproof jacket is critical in keeping the elements at bay (for both wind and rain) Q. What is one thing you pack in your rucksack, whatever the season and whatever the weather? A. A headtorch is the first thing that goes in my rucksack* (I'll be wearing my waterproof jacket ;). Firstly, I love the challenge of navigating my way through the night, but sometimes things can go wrong and the day may easily slide to night whilst still in the hills. Having a headtorch will enable me to get out of any situation easily. * When I climbed Denali, in Alaska, the first thing removed from my rucksack was my headtorch! This was a little unnerving, but with 24-hr day-light, it really wasn't required. Q. What advice would you give to someone going out into the mountains for the first time? A. Expect it to be difficult. Whilst there are many mountain hikes that are suggested to be "easy", this is a relative term meaning "easy for mountain hikes". You will still be required to hike for a long period of time with lots of uphill on sometimes steep, uneven ground. If you've never been into the mountains, you've likely never experienced this and it can be a shock when first encountered. But don't worry, it gets easier. Like anything in life, the more you do it, the easier it becomes (oh, and wear comfortable hiking boots!) Q. What is your favourite season to be out in the mountains and why? A. I love being in the mountains in all seasons in all weather. In Spring we see new life in plants and animals returning to the hills. In Summer we have the long, warm days (perfect for that post-hike pint in a beer garden!). In Autumn we have the changing colours and golden sunsets. but, it is Winter that is my favourite. The snow adds an extra dimension to the mountains - They come alive! The snow means that the mountains are constantly changing as the snow shifts around and the ice creates a natural challenge to overcome seemingly easy obstacles. Q. Name three mountains on your bucket list. 1. Like Dave , I've never had a bucket list. I simply enjoy being out in the mountains, away from the crowds, creating my own little adventure. 2. However, I would like to venture above 8,000m. Any mountain. 3. If I were to pick a single mountain to add to a bucket list, it would be Ama Dablam. From the moment I first saw this lump of rock I've had the urge to get out there and climb it... And maybe it will happen in November 2020 ;) Q. What do you do like to do keep fit when you’re not in the mountains? A. I am always in the mountains and generally keep fit by hiking, scrambling and climbing. When not with groups I'd hike on my own and when I know I have somewhere to shower at the end of it, I would go on the occasional fell/trail run. Q. If you could go anywhere in the world that you hadn’t been, where would it be? A. Antarctica. Ever since I studied Geography at school I have been interested in extreme environments, whether that be natural disasters, erupting volcanoes, extreme heat, or cold. but it is the cold that I love the most and one of the reasons I love Winter Mountains so much. I would love to spend time in Antarctica, hiking the vast nothingness, climbing mountains, or simply photographing the wildlife (who doesn't love a penguin photo?) Q. What is your favourite mountain/expedition/adventure book? (fiction/non-fiction) A. Touching the Void, by Joe Simpson (and Simon Yates). This is a book that I recommend even to my non-hiking friends. A book about endurance and personal stubbornness in getting out of a tough situation. The book is gripping throughout and first inspired me to get out into the higher mountains of the world. Q. What is your favourite City Mountaineering memory? A. This is a tough one. We've now had 8-years of wonderful adventures with some amazing people. But maybe I'd have to say the first ever City Mountaineering trip, because it was the beginning of my biggest adventure. The nerves were high and I so wanted my first ever group to enjoy their mountain experience and share my love of the mountain environment. It's a trip that proved to be the founding stone of everything we now offer (although, the manor house, four-poster be ds and award-winning dinners are a little more extravagant than trips nowadays :) Stuart Shipp Founder, City Mountaineering Stuart's trips Hike Ben Nevis (Female Only) - 10 May Price £445 Hike Ben Nevis - 31 May Price £445 Hike Ben Nevis - 15 June Price £445 Hike Ben Nevis - 28 June Price £445 Hike Ben Nevis - 26 July Price £445 Wild Camping in The Cairngorms - 23 August Price £485 Challenge Cairngorm 4,000ers Challenge - 30 Aug Price £495 Expedition Series Hike The Little Western Isles - 07 Sept Price £795 Assynt & The North Coast 500 - 20 Sept Price £945 Hike Ben Nevis - 04 October Price £445 Winter ascent of Snowdon - 10 Jan Price £395 Winter ascent of Scafell Pike - 17 Jan Price £395 Load More

  • The Altitude Centre | City Mountaineering

THE ALTITUDE CENTRE Check them out The Altitude Centre is the UK’s number 1 altitude training specialist. Founded in 2003 The Altitude Centre has become the leading company in its field. Their clients include National Governing Bodies, Sports Teams, Olympic Champions, Climbers and members of the general public and for those reasons we’ve partnered with them. City Mountaineering has teamed up with The Altitude Centre to make sure we offer you the best possible chance of summiting or completing your adventures with us. Investing in your preparation is not only important for your chances of summiting but also for your enjoyment when you’re on the mountain. There’s not a lot these guys don’t know about how you should train and the affects of altitude on the body… Training at altitude has been proven to not only improve your ability to cope on the higher mountains, but has also proven to be the most effective and efficient way to get fit. So whether you aim to climb Mount Everest, or Mount Snowdon, The Altitude Centre can help. We have been working closely with The Altitude Centre for a number of years now, offering free consultations and unlimited use of their facilities offered free for anyone joining our Kilimanjaro trips . Last year they opened on Saturday mornings exclusively for the Kilimanjaro team to train together. When you visit, the team will take the time to understand your personal goals and will tailor your training specifically for your own needs. On a consultation, they will spent up to an hour checking blood pressure, measuring heart rate, looking at oxygen levels (at rest and under stress) and then explaining what it all means. Another Level of fitness You think you know about your body and training for mountains? These guys go another level and we love it! Having the data behind the science makes the training measurable and provides so much confidence when preparing for these bold adventures we all love. At City Mountaineering we want everyone to enjoy every trip to the fullest. We want clients to be safe and we want them to have a good time. The work the guys do at The Altitude Centre increases the chances of both being a success and something we strongly recommend to all clients how are looking to make sure they’ve done everything they can to prepare for their adventure. WHAT THEY OFFER MOUNTAINEERING CONSULTATION: From £149 This is where you need to start. A consultation with one of our experts will determine your bodies sensitivity to low oxygen. In your appointment we will talk to you about altitude, explain the risks and give you important tips and advice on how best to cope. We then perform a health review that includes monitoring you whilst passively breathing altitude air up to 5000m. This will give you a good idea as to how sensitive you are. We send detailed consultation notes following the appointment. You can also opt to have an active test where you get to exercise at simulated altitude under the guidance of one of our performance staff. EXERCISE SESSIONS: From £20 Hypoxic exercise sessions will let you experience what it is like to exercise at altitude. Just like fitness the more you do, the better you get. To pre-acclimatise for a trip to altitude we recommend regular sessions at least 3 weeks in advance of your trip. IHE SESSIONS: From £20 These sessions utilise the IHE protocol. IHE stands for Intermittent Hypoxic Exposure, a technique of breathing short bursts of mountain air (up to 6,500m) through a mask, alternated with normal air. IHE is the quickest way to adapt to low oxygen. What’s more, no exercise is required! The pre acclimatisation sessions kick start the adaptive process to enable you to cope with low oxygen and to be more efficient with the available air, the main adaptation is at a cellular level with improved mitochondrial function. A 10 session package is our strong recommendation for a minimum amount of sessions ahead of trips to altitude or to help you achieve your health and sporting goals. RENT A SYSTEM: From £225p/m Rent a machine from The Altitude Centre and you can experience the benefits of altitude training up to 6,500m from the comfort of your own home. Options available are either IHE (intermittent hypoxic exposure) , exercise or sleep formats. Full training and advice is provided. You can also combine the 3 different training formats mentioned above from the one machine. Check them out

BASE CAMP SERIES Scotland wild camping Base camp tents setup in Scotland Winter basecamp Tents setup in winter snow Cairngorm winter trek Pulling sleds/pulks over the snow in winter Scotland wild camping Base camp tents setup in Scotland 1/8 Hike in, set up camp, start exploring! Our Base Camp Series offers the chance to experience camp life and to explore the more remote parts of the mountain ranges around Scotland. Having a base camp means that you can spend several days in a remote area, climbing peaks that would otherwise be out of reach on a day-trip. And being able to store kit at the camp means that you can travel light, only carrying what you need for that day's exploration. It also means you've got somewhere familiar to come back to each day, somewhere to cook and to share a bag-o-wine and a dram of whisky with your camp mates as you talk about the adventures you've had that day. Typically, a Base Camp Series trip will last seven days: three days and two nights at the base camp and a day either side for easy day hikes from civilisation (the days either side of the camp also allow for flexibility and contingency should the weather force a change of plan). This really is an amazing way to experience parts of the mountains that few people get to explore. Choose a trip from our diary and join a group or, if you'd like a bespoke trip organised especially for you and your friends on dates that suit you, just get in touch and we'll take care of it! The cost of a Base Camp Series trip includes: Transfers to and from train station/airport. All transport throughout trip (e.g. from accommodation to start of hike). Accommodation at local hostels/hotels on the days either side of the base camp. Use of all camping kit (e.g. expedition tents, sleeping bag & roll mat, stove, water filtration). Use of technical equipment if required (e.g. ice axe, crampons, helmet, pulks on winter trips). Breakfast, lunches and dinners whilst in the mountains (including hot drinks). • Sustainability | City Mountaineering

SUSTAINABILITY JOIN OUR MAILING LIST ABOUT MORE ABOUT US SUSTAINABLE MOUNTAINEERING Like most of us, we at City Mountaineering are hugely concerned about humankind’s impact on the climate and on our natural world. There’s no doubt that the travel industry is a significant contributor to that impact. There’s also no getting around the fact that City Mountaineering is a part of that industry and so we want to make sure that we are doing all we can to mitigate and reduce the impact that we have. The aim of City Mountaineering has always been to promote the mountains here at home in the UK to show people that there is no need to fly abroad to get your mountain fix! Staycationing is an irritating word but it is surely key to a greener future. We also believe that adventure-tourism, much like eco-tourism, is key to the preservation of our wild places. The premise is simple: the more something is worth to the economy, the more likely it is be protected from change. Below is a list of what we call The Easy Wins; the small things that we do to help reduce our impact on the environment. We are always looking to add to this list, to leave no stone unturned, and so welcome any new suggestions! Train travel: We include the cost of travel in almost all of our trips. In our early days, we used to drive a minibus from London. However, we now try to use train travel for all of our trips, only using the minibus for transfers from the train stations. All of the lunches that we make and provide are vegetarian and, whenever possible, we use seasonal ingredients. We make every effort to avoid the use of single-use plastics on our trips; when we’re not making our famous lunch wraps al fresco (Stu has been known to carry a chopping board in his rucksack!) they’ll be wrapped in reusable beeswax “cling film”. We have a zero-tolerance approach to littering and ensure that we take all of our litter off the mountain with us. We always seek to wear our outdoor clothing into the ground, choosing to repair it before we replace it. We also donate our old kit (sleeping bags, waterproofs etc.) to London’s homeless charities so that it can be used again. We limit almost all of our trips to eight clients. As well as being more fun, smaller groups like this help to keep things like path erosion at a minimum. We like to support the local communities we visit and so we make sure we finish our trips in the local pub (okay, so this is the easiest of wins!). FUTURE GOALS We are a small business and so we have to be realistic about what we can and can’t do. However, our long-term goal is to purchase land for eco-friendly City Mountaineering accommodation. We will seek to rewild that land and to plant native trees to offset some of our travel. GIVING BACK The mountain experience is a powerful one. One that can inspire us and even show us that the impossible is possible. We believe that this is an experience that should be available to everyone, not just those of us fortunate enough to be able afford it. Our inner-city communities are home to some of the most disadvantaged people in our society. People for whom the mountains and the wilderness are off limits. People who have never left the boundaries of London, let alone entered the boundaries of a National Park. We want to change that. That’s why we are working with businesses to provide hiking trips to those less fortunate than us. We are in the early stages of this project. Watch this space…
