Is there a better way to spend a long weekend than sleeping under the stars, hidden away from the crowds, in the mountains?

This long weekend will involve exploring the The Cairngorm Plateau – The highest plateau, featuring 5 of the highest 6 mountains, in the UK – hiking and wild camping away from the crowds to clear your mind and open your senses to your majestic surroundings.

You don’t need to have any prior experience (although carrying a larger rucksack may require a basic standard of fitness) and the small group size will enable us to give you our full attention throughout the weekend, ensuring your safety and enjoyment is our number one priority.

Itinerary

  • Meet outside Euston train station and board the Caledonian Sleeper Train for a relaxing overnight train to The Cairngorms National Park (bed in a twin-share, single-sex room)

  • Meet your guide in Aviemore at 7:30am for breakfast and a trip briefing in a local cafe before transferring to the trail head to begin your wild camp journey through one of the UK’s last wildernesses.
  • Today will involve hiking on relatively easy terrain (although the heavy rucksacks will ensure a slow pace) up the valley – through lush green forests, along beautiful rivers and across the site of many BBC Nature Programmes (look out for Golden Eagles, Red Deer, Red Squirrel, Black Grouse, Ptarmigan, Otters, Water Voles, Pine Martin… I could go on and on… This place is as diverse in nature as the UK has to offer!)
  • You will pitch your tents next to the river/lake (wild swim anyone?) before enjoying dinner and retiring to bed under the stars

  • After breakfast and taking down the tents, you will continue your journey on the great Cairngorm Plateau. Once up high, you will hike over the rolling hilly landscape on your journey to your next camp (where you camp will depend on the weather – perhaps camping on a summit if the weather allows)

  • Following a second night camping, you will continue on your journey north, towards Aviemore.
  • Reaching Aviemore at around 6pm, you will head to a local pub for a hearty dinner with your guide and new friends.
  • Optional: Board The Caledonian Sleeper train at 9pm for a relaxing journey to London/Birmingham/Crewe. The train is scheduled to arrive at London Euston around 8am on Monday.

Stuart is an excellent guide. This is my past review ‘seriously fun hiking and camping in Scotland this long bank holiday weekend. I feel like a million bucks’

I had a brilliant time on the 3-day wild camping and hiking trip in the Cairngorms organised by Stuart. He’s a brilliant ‘host’: chilled out yet knowledgeable and with everything very much under control, making for a fun few days outdoors and away from everything.

What an amazing 3 days wild camping in the Cairngorms. The views were outstanding and we caught glimpses of true nature by spotting red deer roaming and even a Golden Eagle! My thanks to Chris who was our very knowledgeable and trusted guide and to the rest of the team for making this a truly wonderful experience!

A challenging, bank holiday weekend of hiking and wild camping in tough conditions (weather wise!). Stuart was a great guide and supported us through this! We were well fed and watered! (Stuart really had thought of everything!). And the inclusion of the overnight train was a huge bonus for us! Amazing group and fun times each night, esp the last one! Thanks to Stuart and all our hiking buddies!

I went on the ‘Wild camping in the Cairngorms’ trip a couple of weeks ago and absolutely loved it. The scenery was stunning, we camped at beautiful, secluded spots and Stuart made sure to tailor the route throughout the trip based on how the group was coping with the hiking (and the weather conditions) so it was an enjoyable challenge. I’d been worried about trekking with all my kit as I’ve never done that before (approx 13- 15kg) but that was fine and we walking at a manageable pace while we got used to the packs. Stuart is really knowledgeable about the area (& mountaineering in general!) and it was just a fantastic experience, even with some wind and rain! I loved getting away from the city and having no signal for a few days – it was great to be with a nice group of people I’d just met and sit about chatting at the end of a day rather than being on phones. I enjoyed the overnight train journey as well!

Wild camping in the Cairngorms with Stuart was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve had in a long time. He’s such a knowledgeable guide and clearly knows the area like the back of his hand. What I really loved was how we were completely off the beaten track—it felt like a real adventure, and exactly the kind of break I needed from the hustle and bustle of London. Stuart has a really calm, reassuring manner that made the whole group feel comfortable and at ease. I came away feeling refreshed, inspired, and already thinking about when I can do another trip with him. Can’t recommend it enough

This was my second trip with City Mountaineering, and once again, they were fantastic! I joined the weekend camping trip in the Cairngorms, and it was such a great experience. Everything was really well organised, and the group was super friendly. Taking the sleeper train to and from London added a fun touch to the trip. Stuart was an excellent guide—really supportive and made sure everyone was well looked after. I highly recommend them.

Stunning hike in the Cairngorms. Stuart and Beinn are excellent guides — knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. I’m looking forward to another trip with them.
