WINTER HIKING: WEEK IN SCOTLAND

A wilderness hiking week in the Scottish Highlands, in winter conditions

DESCRIPTION

A winter ascent of Ben Nevis, Climb a gully on the North Face of Lochnagar, Hike along a snowy ridge, Stay overnight in a snow hole AND one day skiing at a Scottish Ski Centre! - This trip ticks most winter mountaineering boxes...

No prior winter mountaineering experience is required and full instruction will be provided on the use of the equipment and the skills required to keep safe in the winter environment 

 

whether you are new to winter mountaineering, or just want to get away for the week, this trip will cover everything you need to get your winter mountaineering fix and full instruction will be provided in order to stay as safe as possible in the mountains

Covered on the trip will include:

- General Safety (pre-trip planning, in-trip planning and risk mitigating)

- Weather awareness

- Avalanche awareness

- Winter navigation

- Safe use of crampons and ice axe

- Movement techniques on snow and ice

- Ice Axe arrest (the use of you ice axe if you were to fall and slide down a slope - don't worry, this is done in a safe area and is a lot of fun!

- Constructing and using show anchors

- Building an emergency shelter in the snow

- Building (and sleeping in) a snow hole

- Ascend 3-7 Munros (Scottich mountains) in full winter conditions

 

Cost includes:

- 8-nights accommodation

- 6-7 days instruction and guidance by an experienced and qualified mountain leader

- Use of safety equipment (ice axe, crampons and helmet)

- All food when away from towns/cities (dinner in a snow hole, perhaps?)

- Transport and logistical support from Inverness airport

Note:  The weather and ground conditions will not be known until closer to the date and full winter conditions, whilst expected at this time of year, cannot be guaranteed.  The trip will go ahead regardless of conditions.  The itinerary will be adjusted to ensure the most enjoyment from the conditions that are presented.

SCHEDULE:

Saturday (from 10am) - Meet at Inverness airport and drive to our accommodation in The Cairngorms National Park for a trip briefing

Sunday - A day of journeying through the winter wilderness, learning appropriate techniques in order to stay safe in the winter environment

Monday - A second day hiking in the winter wonderland camping out in the wild (in a snow hole if conditions allow)

Tuesday - Leaving our nest, we will ascend a local summit before returning to the snow hole for a second night

Wednesday - We will leave our self-made home and return to the minibus for a drive to The Western Highlands

Thursday - A day of skiing in a local ski centre

Friday - A winter ascent of Ben Nevis (up a frozen waterfall, a north face gully or up along a ridge) - the route depends on conditions

Saturday - Another day of journeying through the winter wilderness, specific location, mountain and route to be determined based on local conditions

Sunday - We will return to Inverness airport for flights back to London
